One of the main factors that lead to World War 1 was the militaristic behavior of many countries around the world leading up to 1914.  As stated on the Rice University summary of causes of WWI, “Militarism was a long-term cause of the war; due to the length of time it takes a country to build its military to the strength necessary to wage a major war.”  Therefore, is countries had not been building up their nations armed forces the war would not have been able to occur on such a grand scale.   WWI clearly illustrated how an arms race can lead to the most deadly of consequences.
